With more than 20 milongas and practicas in the Los Angeles area (25 milongas according to Stephane Hamel), and perhaps about 150 to 200 regular dancers (maybe not even that many), do we need more?
The answer, according to teachers and milongas organizers, is yes! March alone features four new milongas in the L.A. area.
March 4th will be the new Milonga @ LAX, organized by the lovely and ever-so friendly IIona Glinarsky, and friends. The opening event will feature Brett Hershey as DJ, as well as guest performances and an optional Argentine dinner.
The Grand Opening admission is $5, and the regular milonga, which will take place every 1st Sunday of each month will cost $10. There’s a free class from 6- 7 p.m., and dancing from 7 till 11 p.m. 8946 Sepulveda Eastway, LA, 90045
A week later, on March 9th, Milonga Feroz y Turquesa…A Ferocious All Nighter, debuts. Organized by Mary Fu and Hassan Seremet, the all night milonga features shoes and accessories for sale. Here’s their mission statement:
As local Los Angeles vendors focusing on tango-related handmade products, Mary (Ferociously Handmade) and Hasan (Turquoise Shoes) partnered up to create a new milonga in which ALL dancers and local vendors alike will have a space in which to share, to thrive. We hope to create a welcoming community-building atmosphere for all tango lovers every 2nd Friday of the month.”
As stated above, the milonga is every 2nd Friday of the month, and runs from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 11943 Montana Ave. Los Angeles 90049
A week after that, the Alpine Village Tango Night will celebrate its grand opening on Friday March 16. The milonga will take place at the Alpine Restaurant in Torrance, where the German Oktoberfest is celebrated every year in September and October.
Take a break from dancing to tunes played by DJ Claudio Otero, to nosh on Bratwurst and Polish sausages and down some beers.
Opening night is $12 for class and milonga. The class on opening night will be taught by Naomi Hotta and Varo Biagi, who will also perform. The lesson takes place 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. and then the dancing begins. The milonga takes place every third Friday. 833 West Torrance Blvd,Torrance, CA 90502
If your feet have survived Sunday at LAX or the Argentine Association, Monday at Divos, Tuesday at Leonardos, Wednesday at El Floridita or Tapas, Thursday at Monica’s, one of the Fridays above or at Westwood, Milonga Querida, Libertad, or Los Amigos, Saturday at El Encuentro or La Que Fatalba, Con Sabor a Tango, or at Los Amigos again, you can then start the tango week again on a Sunday with the grand opening of the Grand Casino Milonga !
This new milonga, hosted by Naomi Hotta opens March 25 at the Grand Casino Bakery and Cafe in Culver City. Looks like it’ll be easier to remember when to go to this one, it’s every Sunday [Correction: Naomi informed me that this is a monthly milonga–so that means the last Sunday of each month. Get out your smartphone calendars so you can keep track!]. There’s dancing inside on a hardwood floor or on the terrace. Fresh Argentine pastries and food are made on the premises.
The Grand Opening DJ is Vincent and special performance by Maestros Esteban Moreno and Claudia Codega. $12 at the door or register in advance for Esteban and Claudia’s workshop to get $5 off the door. 3826 Main St. Culver City.
